Deep belly breathing, also known as the full yogic breath or 3-part breath (Dirga Pranayama), is one of the most essential breathing practices in yoga. In this video, I break the breath down into three parts: the belly, the rib cage, and the chest/clavicles, then guide you in linking them together into one smooth, nourishing breath.
This breathing technique helps calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and create a sense of ease in the body. I teach this breath to all of my yoga students, and it’s a practice I personally return to often, including during prenatal doctor visits when I want to feel more grounded and relaxed.
This style of deep, diaphragmatic breathing can also support pelvic floor relaxation by reducing tension in the body and encouraging coordination between the breath and the pelvic floor, which is especially helpful during pregnancy.
While this practice is especially supportive during pregnancy, it’s truly for everyone. All ages, all bodies, all levels of experience. This is a foundational breath you can return to anytime you need calm, presence, or connection.
You can practice this breath on its own or use it as a foundation for yoga flows, meditation, or relaxation.
