Patients with obesity and metabolic disease have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease.
Diana Santos (University of Coimbra, Portugal) focuses on epicardial adipose tissue, which surrounds the heart and displays biochemical, thermogenic and cardioprotective properties. However, the crosstalk between epicardial fat and the myocardium is largely unknown – do microRNAs have a role in glucose and lipid metabolism between human epicardial and subcutaneous adipocytes?
Sathish Babu Vasamsetti (University of Pittsburgh, USA) sets out to explore how the apoptosis of hematopoietic progenitor-derived adipose tissue-resident macrophages contributes to insulin resistance after myocardial infarction.
This is part of the ‘Physiology of Obesity: From Mechanisms to Medicine’ series.
