ABOUT THIS FILM

Barn owls Gylfie & Finn
Spring is here and our barn owl pair, Finn and Gylfie, have been busily preparing for nesting. They got together late last year, spending most of their days together in the ash stump.
Finding a nest
But this nest also caught the eye of kestrels, jackdaws and tawny owls, so, in mid-December the barn owls moved to my larger Elm Stump nest. This a favourite of Gylfie's, who has already raised four broods here.
Reaffirming their bond
The barn owl pair continued their courtship throughout the winter. Watch these tender moments as they groom one another. This known as allopreening. It helps the pair bond, which is important since they will need to support one another when they raise their chicks.
Defending their nest box
As the breeding season gets closer, nest boxes here at Fotherdale become highly sought after. Unknown to Finn and Gylfie, the tawny owls also have a claim on Elm Stump. Watch as Luna, the female tawny owl, tries to scare the barn owl pair away.
The barn owls stay put
Despite the tawny owl's persistent attacks, the barn owls prepare for nesting. Watch as Gylfie looks around for a perfect place to lay and then begins to dig a nest scrape. She breaks up pellets to make a soft bed for the eggs.
Finn's courtship technique is slowly improving
Finn is a young male and this is possibly his first breeding season. He's made a few dumb mistakes, but he's slowly getting better. One of the most amusing was when he refused to hand over a mouse he caught for Gylfie. During courtship males do this to show females that they can provide for them and the chicks.
Barn owl eggs are expected any day
Last year the barn owls laid on March 31st, so I'm expecting this pair to lay any day now.
