Drive with me (in glorious 4K) - we're travelling east from Doornfontein in Johannesburg, to Edenglen in the city of Ekurhuleni (enable captions for more info as we drive).
Doornfontein is one of Johannesburg’s oldest suburbs which originated from a farm owned by Frederick Bezuidenhout in the 1880s. Originally known as "Millionaire's Row" for its wealthy Randlords in the 1890s, it evolved into a, vibrant Jewish cultural hub in the early 20th century before it, and the surrounding suburbs, decayed into almost slum-like conditions after the transition to democracy. Today it a semi-industrial area full of hijacked apartments and home to the notorious Ponte City, the University of Johannesburg's Doornfontein Campus and Emirates Airline park (formerly Ellis Park).
We drive through once prestigious suburbs such as Bertrams, Judith's Paarl and Bezuidenhout Valley. Then on through Cyrildene, past China Town, Bruma, then onto the highway near the Eastgate shopping centre. We zoom through the Gillooly's interchange (where we witness rare justice as a traffic offender gets caught in the act), towards OR Thambo airport, but exiting at the Edenvale offramp.
Edenglen, just a few km further, is a well-established suburb within the broader Edenvale area. Its roots go back to the post-Anglo Boer War followed by the development of the region around the Rietfontein Gold Mine. Originally part of a mining settlement founded in 1903, the area developed rapidly from a farm area (Rietfontein agricultural holdings) into a quiet, tree-lined suburb.
