8. SOUNDBITE (French) Albert Uderzo, Asterix's illustrator:
"It is obvious that we didn't expect to have this kind of success. We even didn't expect it to be a success in France. Rene Goscinny and I were first happy to be successful and then this spread to Germany, first in Germany, with a catch on nearly as big as the one in France. It reassured us because at the time, some people were saying that Asterix was praising General De Gaulle, and especially was making fun of the negative aspects of the French middle-class, which was absolutely not our wish. So from the moment the success spread to other countries, we were reassured."

10. SOUNDBITE (French) Albert Uderzo, Asterix's illustrator:
"I hope that (Asterix) will survive us and that he will live as long as possible. You know the life of a hero ultimately depends only on the readers' will."

12. SOUNDBITE (French) Albert Uderzo, Asterix's illustrator:
"We have had the privilege to describe an era that we know little about that even historians don't know much about, in which we could play with fiction and transport the French spirit that we know into it."
13. Mid shot Albert Uderzo and Elisabeth Taburet-Delahaye talking
14. SOUNDBITE (French) Elisabeth Taburet-Delahaye, head of the Cluny museum and curator of the exhibition:
"Lots of books, articles and practically even theses have been written to try to explain (Asterix's) success. It could be explained by an introduction to numerous traditions, the fact that the first album was published shortly after the second world war, the resistance of the little village as a parallel to what France has just lived through (Nazi occupation and the French resistance). Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo illustrated with such a specific sense of humour, the typical or clich traits of the French or Gaullois."

LEAD IN
The comic book legend, Asterix, turns fifty today (29 October).
The pint-sized warrior from Gaul and his larger companion, Obelix, have entertained generations of children and their parents, selling millions of books worldwide.
STORYLINE
Meet Asterix, the tiny resident of a village in Gaul, who leads the resistance against the invading Roman army.
To mark the cartoon's 50th anniversary there's a new book and a special exhibit here in Paris at the Cluny Museum.
The public first met the comic warrior on October 29, 1959 when he appeared in the French comic strip, Pilote.
His companion is the much larger Obelix. Back in 50 BC they make their name fending off the Roman conquest of their small village in Brittany.
