The 8th game of the 1992 Fischer-Spassky rematch, held in Sveti Stefan and Belgrade, Yugoslavia, was a thrilling encounter in the King's Indian Defense, Samisch Variation with the Panno Main Line (ECO E84). Boris Spassky, playing White, opened with 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. f3 O-O 6. Be3 Nc6 7. Nge2 a6 8. Qd2 Rb8, setting up a solid structure aimed at a kingside expansion with h4 and Bh6. Fischer, as Black, countered aggressively with the Panno Variation (7...a6 and 8...Rb8), preparing a queenside pawn storm while blunting White's attack with 9...h5. Spassky exchanged bishops early (10. Bh6 e5 11. Bxg7 Kxg7), closing the center with 12. d5 Ne7, but Fischer recaptured space with 13...c6 14. dxc6 Nxc6.

The middlegame featured intricate maneuvering: Spassky castled queenside (15. O-O-O), placed knights on d5 and e3, but Fischer's 17...b5 pushed on the queenside, forcing White to react. A key moment came at 19...Qb6, a multifunctional move that supported the b-pawn, attacked White's knight on e3, and shifted pressure to dark squares. Spassky's 21. Nd5 was criticized as suboptimal; alternatives like 21. Ne2 could have offered better exchanges. Fischer then centralized with 20...Nd4 and 22...Nf6, trading bishops on d5 (23...Bxd5 24. cxd5), and positioned his queen effectively with 25...Qe7.

Tension built as Spassky pushed 26. g4 Nd7 27. g5, but Fischer safely maneuvered his king to f8 and e8. At move 29. Bf1 Nc5 30. Bh3 Rc7, Spassky's fateful 31. Rc1 invited disaster. As Spassky later admitted, "When I put down my rook on c1, I immediately saw the knight stroke. I knew what a 'killer' instinct Bobby has and that, of course, he would not miss this good opportunity to finish me off." Fischer unleashed a brilliant double knight combination: 31...Ncb3 32. axb3 Nxb3, deflecting the a-pawn to allow the second knight to land on b3, attacking the queen on d2. Then 33. Rc6 Nxd2+ 34. Rxd2, netting Fischer the queen for two knights and a pawn – a material gain that left him with a decisive advantage.

This tactical fireworks display highlighted Fischer's tactical acuity, even after 20 years away from competitive chess. Both players reportedly missed subtleties in the tortuous position leading up to the combo; Spassky could have defended better with 31. Qc2, as suggested by his second Yuri Balashov, potentially equalizing. Engine analysis later confirmed alternatives like 33. Qc2 or 33. Qa3 could hold equality, but Spassky's choice led to collapse. Fischer consolidated with 34...Kf8 35. Rxa6 Ra7, and despite Spassky's resistance, the end came swiftly: 37. Bf1 Ra1+ 38. Kxa1 Qa7+ 39. Kb1 Qxe3 40. Kc2 b4 0-1. The final 40...b4 threatened further incursions, leaving Spassky's position hopeless with his king exposed and material down.

Overall, the game exemplified Fischer's undiminished brilliance, with a performance rating around 2594 – placing him among the world's top 20 despite his long hiatus. Computer analysis showed Fischer's moves deviated only 0.4 from optimal on average, underscoring his precision. This victory gave Fischer a 3-2 lead in the match (with draws), contributing to his eventual 10-5 triumph in the controversial rematch, played under UN sanctions.
