At its narrowest point, the Strait of Hormuz is only about 33 km (21 miles) wide. But what’s even more surprising is that the actual shipping lanes used by massive oil tankers are only about 3 km wide in each direction.
This extremely tight passage forces hundreds of ships carrying oil and cargo to pass through a very small corridor, making the strait one of the most strategically vulnerable waterways in the world.
Because so much global trade and energy passes through this narrow channel, even a small disruption could have huge consequences for the global economy.
