Build your own sextant (celestial navigation instrument)
This A4 sized design ends up with radius about 17 cm, which is enough to read minutes ( +-10' ).
Print on inkjet or laser printer
The configuration is different from most sextants in that the Vernier scale is on top of the main arc scale. Normally the Vernier is underneath, attached to the arm.
To read the minutes part, first estimate from A tick position into the degree,
than find the tick on the Vernier that matches with the tick on the main arc.
Two 60' Verniers side-by-side allows reading high angles. If one Vernier is out of the arc, use the other ( cannot read much above 90 deg I'm afraid :o(
Uses materials: foamboard, mirrors, toothpicks, Lego pieces and simple tools.
