Custom chainsaw mill walkthrough. How it works and how to getting started with milling logs that doesn't have to be complex and expensive.
This mill is similar to the Logosol style chainsaw mills where you have two flat planes, one that is fixed that the chainsaw rides across and another movable one that allows the log to move up and down for each cut with the aid of the car jack stands. This style is easy to use allowing the saw to be right at arms length doesn't put stress on my back leaning over or getting on the ground. It took several modifications to get to this point as I tend to learn something new each time and will continue to improve as I go. I started with some small junk logs to get the hang of it at first.
Built mostly from upcycled scrap/pallet wood and parts from around the shop makes this a cheap build with a few purchased parts coming in at about $50 for me, this might be higher if you need to buy wood. With the aid of a free chainsaw that i got from my local dump (people get rid of perfectly good things sometimes), getting started with milling my own logs has been super easy and cheap while I learn and experiment with this new setup.
The mill is portable and breaks down to a few parts that I can easily store in my shed when I am not using it taking up little space.
The chainsaw shown is a Ryobi C4618 which is not the best option for milling but for free and really focusing on taking my time with the aid of a ripping chain, it gets the job done. This is not a production level or commercial level mill so I am not in a rush. The wood I am milling is for my own projects. I tend to do a few cuts at a time then let the saw rest and cool down, then come back hours later for a few more trying to get a log done in a day or two.
As with any power tools its best to be careful and use PPE like a good dust mask, eye, and ear protection. Stay safe out there.
