Описание: Welcome, My Fellow Jokers, to Throgs Neck or Land of Peace!
Throgs Neck is a neighborhood & a peninsula located in the south-eastern part of the Bronx. Throgs Neck was originally named Vredeland, Dutch for “Land of Peace". The “Throggs Neck” name originally comes from John Throckmorton who settled in the area during 1643 & built a colony. The traditional spelling of Throgs Neck was with 2 Gs, but during the development of the bridge, officials decided to shorten it to one G since two wouldn’t fit on many street signs. Furthermore, Throgs Neck was originally an island at high tide, until new settlers began to settle & expand. After the development of incorporations in the Bronx, transit lines began to extend to the neighborhood, bringing in many Italian farmers and tradesmen to the area. During the 19th century, the area remained as the site of large farms but soon began to convert into estates. In the 1920s, the large estates were converted into smaller row homes and densely built bungalow lots.
Today, you will find a peaceful neighborhood near the water with a view of the Throgs Neck Bridge & Whitestone Bridge. You will also find several beach clubs, a diverse housing stock, such as waterfront condominiums, middle-class homes & the Throggs Neck Houses, which was built in 1953 as one of the first low-income public housing projects in New York City. Throgs Neck is still is a “Land of Peace”.
