On 12 April 2022, Theresa Lola ran a free, hour-long online workshop on protest poetry for young poets aged 13-25 worldwide via a Zoom Webinar. The theme was inspired by the People of 1381 project, which explores one of the earliest mass uprisings in English history, when all kinds of people protested against poll tax. We've excerpted one of the activities she ran during that workshop for you to try here. You can find more protest poetry prompts, background to the People of 1381, and a free young people's competition on protest poetry at bit.ly/1381challenge We'd love to read your poems - submit them by 9 May 2022 for the chance to win this competition, or head to poetrysociety.org.uk/young-poets/ for more free Poetry Society competitions for young people.
During the workshop, Theresa references the poem 'To Bless the Memory of Tamir Rice' by Tsitsi Ella Jaji. Please read this poem in advance, but be aware it has strong language and references the murder of Tamir Rice in a non-graphic way. You can find it here: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem...
Enjoy!
