Tired of living in a world like this, the character of the song wanders through valleys and forests in his final hope to meet God, in whom he's never believed during the entirety of his life. He eventually realizes that God is in fact present in everything around him. Soon after that, he ends his own life by the side of a river and embraces death "the companion who walks with us every step of the way", as he wonders about God, life, death and mankind who destroys its own world without perceiving the consequences.
