STORYLINE:
United Nations personnel stationed in Kuwait to monitor the country's ceasefire with Iraq continued a phased withdrawal from the common border on Tuesday.
UNIKOM (United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observer Mission) observers are being pulled out in expectation of a US-led assault into Iraq and across the border they control.
All non-essential staff are being moved to Kuwait City leaving only a small skeleton staff on the 170km de-militarised buffer zone.
The 20 vehicle convoy transported surplus weapons and ammunition from the border, including AK47s, machine gun ammunition and rocket propelled grenades.
The weapons are now being stored at a Kuwaiti air base.
UNIKOM was established in 1991 after a cease fire when an international coalition forced Iraqi troops out of Kuwait and is made up of a battalion of soldiers from Bangladesh.
