🇲🇽Honestly, we feel much safer traveling in Baja than we do many US cities, but there are still some basic safety precautions that every traveler should take: ⬇️

🌃We’ll say it again—don’t drive at night. Plan out your route so you arrive in the afternoon, with a couple of hours to spare until dark. The main hazards are animals on the road, speeding truckers, and (extremely rarely in the border areas), higher instances of violent crime (just like many other places in the world!)

❌Don’t do drugs, stay out of nightclubs, and avoid late night bars (but we’re with kids, so…not a problem!)

⛽️Stock your vehicle with emergency supplies (water, first aid, food, etc), and fill up your gas tank whenever you get a chance so you never risk running low.

🗺️Don’t rely on cell phones or GPS. Have a paper map, know where you’re going, and ask about current road conditions ahead of time.

💵Carry cash—it solves lots of problems—and don’t store it all in one place.

🇲🇽Learn some Spanish! You can get by with basic Spanish, but having someone in your group with a conversational grasp on the language definitely helps.

🥾Pack tough shoes (and band aids) for your kids. Cactus thorns, sharp rocks, and shells can leave you a little bit bloodied, and remember to shuffle your feet in the ocean to scare aware any stingrays.

🔫Don’t be afraid of military checkpoints and all the dudes with guns. Trust us—you’re not the people they’re looking for.

🎒Don’t pack anything you don’t want to have stolen. Sure—theft happens—but it happens almost everywhere. Just have general awareness and use common sense and don’t leave valuables out in plain sight.

🚔Yes—you might have to pay off the cops (up to you if you want to or not), but it’s just more unsettling and annoying than “dangerous.”
