What defines those classic heroic tales? A hero faced with impossible tasks, overcoming all odds, to fulfill their duty to do what’s just in the world. These heroes are considered perfection, almost impossibly so. The sad truth is that human beings are flawed creatures… there is no perfect. But this “perfection” in heroes is what Izuku Midoriya obsessed over until the imperfections and expectations of what makes a hero broke even his willful spirt. The childhood stories Deku had grown up hearing only told one side of the story and his world was rocked when heroes turned out not to be everything they were cracked up to be.

There never was a classic fairytale ending for anyone chosen to hold One For All’s power. Even for Deku. Somewhere along the way the boy lost his hopes, his dreams, and himself—will he ever be able to pull himself out? Or will he be trapped in his mind forever?

Deku had the terrible occurrence of meeting Tomura Shigaraki, who filled the boy’s head with doubt and Deku couldn’t help himself but investigate. The boy became enlightened by the hero’s need for the spotlight, discovered death tolls that went unannounced to protect hero’s names… the list went on and on. Deku had never felt more lost—what really was the difference between a hero and villain?

Inviting his friends over for a celebration a toast is made in Deku’s honor and his world fades. Deku had been pulling himself in two different directions until his string was pulled taught. He /wanted/ his dream of being a hero but he felt the abyss of his doubts in all hero’s pulling him deeper and deeper into his crazed mind. Will he ever be able to pull himself out?

BOOM. Finally, we get to share this video with everyone! We’ve been really excited to publish this project because it actually has a lot of meaning to us? We held on to the script for years before finally creating it. Plus it’s exploring an entirely different aspect to a character—and that’s so fun for us to do.
More importantly—it marks the last CMV we had the pleasure of making with Sunni before she moved to New York City, of course we’ll still be making content together but the distance between us is A LOT further. But we also had the chance to include some great friends who have helped us out tremendously these past couple of months, both Oliver and Gabby were a wonder to have on set and Heather pulled through like she always has for us. We can’t thank all these incredible people enough.

On another note, this CMV was a part of a collaboration project with a ton of other amazing and talented CMV makers. The idea was that all these group take the same theme, which was “Classic”, and apply it with our own skills and ideas to see what we came up with. We strongly suggest you check their videos out too so you’re able to see their takes on the theme.

We decided what better way to interpret the theme than playing with the classic hero turned villain story. Boku no Hero Academia is what everyone’s ideal of heroes and heroism looks like, what a wicked twist it would be to to turn Deku’s character into the villain of the story. Deku’s story alone is a beautiful almost Peter Parker/Spiderman like story that could so easily be warped that we had a lot of fun getting into the character’s headspace. That matched with the formal feeling of a dinner party we thought it played well with most 80’s mob vibes—and check out that TV—now that’s a wicked find on the side of the road and it actually worked!
