Remember that at Indigo Ranch Studios they recorded using vintage analog gear, and in the mixes you can hear the saturation and coloration coming from the equipment that was used.
The most important point of this video is that, by knowing how to use the right tools, you don’t need to spend a lot of money. The Blackstar HT-Drive pedal has a high-voltage 12AX7 vacuum tube, which gives it plenty of headroom and a very pleasant tube saturation. The D-9 distortion pedal pushes the Blackstar harder, so in practice you end up with a kind of homemade tube preamp.
If you place an EQ pedal before the Blackstar HT-Drive, you essentially have a tube preamp that can even simulate different types of amplifiers. I encourage you to try it—you’ll notice that the sound is much more organic and articulate than most digital options.
I probably sounded a bit too purist there, hahaha.
