Star Wars - VHS PAL Widescreen Trailer (1991)
Unlike those who saw the original Star Wars films when they first came out at the cinema, there was a generation of Star Wars fans who grew up in the 1980s, only having seen the original trilogy on video. Although the sound was better, viewers were still getting little more than half the picture that had been seen on cinema screens, because Star Wars was being cropped (or 'panned and scanned') to fit the dimensions of a 4:3 TV set. At this time, the idea of releasing films in 'letterbox' format – that is, with black bars at the top and bottom of the screen so that the viewer could see the full width of the cinema picture – was almost unheard of.
1991 gave fans the opportunity buy the widescreen versions for the first time. Seeing the movies in their full entirety opened up a whole new world of unseen detail. This was such a big deal to fans, only to be surpassed by the theatrical releases of the special editions, later in the 90s.
