When you file a lawsuit, it does not mean that you will automatically go to trial. In fact, many lawsuits are resolved long before the case ever goes to trial. There are several stages that a civil lawsuit typically goes through before it is finally resolved.

The first step in any civil litigation is the filing of a complaint with the court. The complaint outlines the plaintiff's legal claim against the defendant and sets forth the facts supporting the claim. Once the complaint is filed, the court will set a date for a hearing to be held.

At the hearing, both sides will have an opportunity to present their case to the judge. The judge will then decide whether or not there is enough evidence to proceed to trial. If so, the case will be set for trial at a later date. If not, the judge may dismiss the case entirely or order some type of relief for the plaintiff.

The trial is where both sides present their evidence and arguments to a jury. The jury will then render a verdict in favor of either the plaintiff or defendant. If either party is unsatisfied with the verdict, they may file an appeal with a higher court.

So, these five stages of civil litigation include:

1. The complaint and answer
2. Discovery
3. Motions
4. Settlement
5. Trial
