Submarines hunt ships in the deep ocean. They don't hunt steam locomotives on dry land. But the USS Barb was not a normal submarine.
In July 1945, Commander Eugene "Lucky" Fluckey realized there were no Japanese ships left to sink. So, he did the unthinkable: he decided to "invade" Japan.
He fitted his submarine with improvised rocket launchers welded to the deck. He sailed into shallow waters where the keel scraped the mud. And on a dark night, he sent eight men ashore to blow up a coastal supply train.
In this video, we tell the incredible true story of the USS Barb. We break down the engineering behind the first "ballistic missile submarine," the risks of operating in 6 fathoms of water, and how a crew of sailors managed to put a train on their battle flag.
