Let's be real: the amount of photography gear out there can be overwhelming, especially if you're a beginner who doesn't know what half this stuff does. Will a cheap flash ruin your photos? Are some camera straps way better than others? In a perfect world, we’d all just splurge on top-of-the-line equipment across the board, but who has that kind of money? (We certainly don’t!)
The good news is that there are several pieces of equipment that don’t need to be pricey to result in polished, professional images! Here are our tips on where to cut back in your budget so you can save up to buy that fancy lens you’ve been lusting after for months. (Keep savin’, champ. You’ll get there one day!)

DEFINITIONS OF TECHNICAL TERMS:
Flash modifiers: These are pretty self explanatory! They can be hoods, umbrellas, or other pieces of equipment that change the effect of a flash, often by redirecting or diffusing the light.
Recycle time (aka “recycle rate”): After a flash goes off, it needs time to recharge before it can go off again. The rate of that recharge is the recycle time. A more expensive flash is likely to have a faster recycle time.
Automatic metering: The flash automatically reads the ambient light in an environment and adjusts the light level for proper exposure.
Off-camera flash: A flash that is mounted on a tripod or otherwise set up separately from your camera instead of attaching directly to the top of your camera.
Multiple channels (on a flash): Remember your walkie talkies as a kid? Setting it to one channel would let you communicate with your brother’s walkie talkie, and the other would pick up weird radio signals. Similarly, being able to set up flashes with multiple channels allows you to decide when you want certain flashes to go off. For example, if you have a flash on channel A on the left side of the room and another on channel B on the right, and all of the subjects at the party happen to be on the left side of the room, you can use channel A to only set off those flashes.
Softbox: A light modifier that affixes to a flash (or continuous light source) and diffuses the light for a softer, more controlled effect.
