How To Treat Cat Conjunctivitis?
Almost all cats will suffer from conjunctivitis at some point in their lives (sometimes called pink eye).
There are many things you and your veterinarian can do to treat conjunctivitis and get your cat feeling better in no time.
Regardless of whether you're a human or a cat, having eye difficulties is an uncomfortable and miserable experience.
What Does "Cat Conjunctivitis" Mean?
A thin mucous membrane lines the inner surfaces of a cat's eyelids (conjunctiva). Additionally, the conjunctiva covers the exterior of the eye.
It is slick, smooth, and has a light pink tint when it is in good health. By acting as a conduit for tears that come into contact with the surface, this membrane serves to lubricate the eyeball. The cat blinks and sheds a few tears.
By containing antibodies within its lining, the conjunctiva also aids in the prevention of eye infections.
Conjunctivitis is the medical term for the inflammation of this tissue.
Do Some Cats Have a Higher Risk of Conjunctivitis?
Conjunctivitis can affect cats of any age, but it most frequently affects kittens.
This is particularly true for kittens under a year old.
Additionally, purebred cats appear to have a higher incidence of conjunctivitis.
Additionally, breeds like Persians and Himalayans, which have flat cheeks and short noses, appear to be more prone to conjunctivitis.
What Causes Cat Conjunctivitis?
Infectious feline conjunctivitis is frequently brought on by viral rather than bacterial diseases.
The most frequent reasons include:
1.Type 1 feline herpesvirus
This virus is a major contributor to upper respiratory illnesses in cats, including nose, sinus, and/or throat infections. Oftentimes, this condition is referred to as feline viral rhinotracheitis.
2. Calicivirus in cats.
This virus can infect cats' upper respiratory systems as well as their mouths.
3. Chlamydia
If left untreated, this bacterial organism can harm the lungs and cause conjunctivitis and upper respiratory problems.
4. Mycoplasma
This particular bacterial species frequently cause conjunctivitis and upper respiratory infections in cats.
What Signs and Symptoms Indicate Cat Conjunctivitis?
The cat's inflammatory immunological reaction to the bacterium or virus is as follows:
Redness
Increased Discharge (which can be clear and
watery or dark-colored, green, or yellow, and thick.
Pain
Squinting
often blinking
Take your cat to the vet as soon as possible if you see any of these signs. It's critical to treat your cat as soon as possible since conjunctivitis can swiftly spread from one eye to the other.
Conjunctivitis can potentially lead to more serious problems if it is neglected for a long time.
How to treat cat conjunctivitis?
There are cases where conjunctivitis will go away without treatment, particularly if it is light, but this is not the time to "wait and see."
If your cat exhibits any symptoms of eye irritation or discharge, you should call your veterinarian right away. By doing so, you may rapidly rule out other eye problems and concentrate on the best course of action.
Topical antibiotic eye drops or ointments are frequently administered as therapy.
For a period of two to three weeks, the drops or ointment are typically used two to four times per day.
Make sure to adhere to the precise guidelines provided by your vet for your cat. Veterinarians may need to recommend oral antibiotics when clinical symptoms return when topical treatment is administered alone.
