I break down the pros, cons, and real-world sound differences; plus whether it makes more sense to spend less and mod over time, or go straight for a Gibson.

Epiphone Highlights: Many budget models already have premium features like Grover tuners, CTS pots and/or push/pull electronics. Models like the Epiphone Les Paul Classic or Traditional could give you these upgrades at a lower price.

Gibson Highlights: Modern Studios come with PCBs instead of hand-wired pots, which can make pickup swaps trickier unless you stick with Gibson’s ecosystem. (Personally, I’m a Seymour Duncan fan.)
