There are many projects that you can pull off on your own and save money in the process. A Mr. Handyman owner walks you through his top 5 DIY home repairs.
You might think the do-it-yourself craze just isn't for you. Maybe you've had bouts of DIY anxiety fueled by costly mistakes in the past when confidence seemed to exceed your skillset.
There are some home repairs, though, every single one of us should be able to do without calling in the pros.
Mr. Handyman franchise owner, Alan Rachan, shares his top five DIY home repairs.
Top 5 DIY home repairs:
1. Jammed garbage disposals: There's a really common fix for jammed garbage disposals. Make sure the power is off, then try the reset button on the bottom, or look for the key. If you see this key in your drawer, don't throw it away. And then you just turn it.
2. Weatherstripping is one of those projects that you can do yourself. It should be replaced whenever there's a tear to save energy. And basically, it just pulls out of a groove. Cut the new one to size and push it back in the groove. In just a few minutes, the project is complete.
3. Kick-ins and burglaries: Most of those break-ins happen because the door's not secure and then they're easy to kick in. A metal plate screwed to the door jamb helps hold the door shut. The key is to use longer three-inch screws so burglars have a tougher time.
4. Mold: Alan recommends spraying a simple homemade solution on it. It's about 75% water and 25% Clorox. Just one time. One time will get it done, but next year it'll come back.
5. A hole in your drywall: If it's a small hole yeah, people can fix it themselves. Put a metal tape patch over the hole and cover completely with a thin coat of mud. Once dry, sand down with a sponge and spray whatever texture you want on the wall. One thing you want to make sure is after it dries, put a primer coat on it and then paint over it.
DIY can be a smart, money-saving move until you need some rescuing from your renovation.
The pros say to leave electrical and plumbing problems to them.
