Every now and then we find ourselves reeling in shock at the news of a shaykh or imam or religious teacher who has abused their position of privilege and authority and harmed vulnerable people who respect and look up to them. What's the community to do? Dr. Safiyyah Ally says there aren't easy answers. But she offers 4 pieces of advice: 1) We need to change our relationship with our religious leaders by choosing them better and not elevating them so they can do no harm; 2) Religious leaders themselves need to develop greater awareness of the power they wield and take measures so they don't harm others; 3) We need to collectively foster the ability to think critically and independently; and 4) We need to do more to support people who are affected and help them seek justice.
