The M27 is a lightweight, air-cooled, gas piston operated, shoulder-fired assault rifle that is used primarily as an alternative to heavier belt-fed squad automatic weapons. The IAR can sustain a rate of fire of 36 rounds a minute with a 600-round load. The maximum effective range of the IAR is 550 meters for individual targets and 700 meters for area targets.
It significantly enhances the Automatic Rifleman’s mobility and movement speed over heavier automatic weapons while preserving the Marine’s ability to suppress or destroy targets of most immediate concern to the fire team.
