The Togakure-ryu school of ninjutsu is historically one of the top 3 along with Iga and Koga. It has continued to be passed on from generation to generation with the current leader being the 35th. Togakure-ryu originated in Togakushi, the mountain wilderness above central Nagano City. Shugendo ascetic monks considered the area to be a spiritual destination and honed their survival skills in the area’s caves and rough environs, learning as well which wild plants were medicinal … and which could be used for poison. Togakure-ryu ninjas evolved from this training. Today you can trek through Togakushi’s wilderness in search for the caves the shugendo monks inhabited, and at the Togakushi Ninpo Center there are displays of the tools the ninja used and depictions of their techniques. For children, there is also the Togakushi Kids Ninja Village. Both have a shuriken range for ninja throwing stars and a trick house where you try to make your way through finding the hidden passages.
When in Togakushi, be sure to try the area’s famous soba buckwheat noodles.
The video depicts a trial run of a guided excursion that includes trekking the forest preserve, conch shell blowing taught by a Shugendo master who also led the participants in a mountain prayer at the mystical Koumu-in Temple, ninja training by local Togakure-ryu practitioners, and a taiko drumming lesson. The “finale” was a jam session involving conch shell, taiko drums and a ninjutsu demonstration.
