Trail Overview - Jacks is a short connector trail in Hartman Rocks but has lots of moderate rock features. The bottom of the trail starts off of Tug, off of Kill Hill Road, and it gains some elevation as it winds up the rocky mountainside and ends back on Kill Hill Road. There's a slatted metal pinch point at the top, across from a small parking area. Throughout the short trail, you'll find ramped rock slabs, ledges that are about a foot tall, a series of small step-ups, and a long section of slab rock. The surface is a mix of dirt and pea gravel, which makes it slippery in spots. There are lots of twisty turns and steeper spots. It's also a bit rutted at the bottom. Watch out for mountain bikers and other trail users, this trail is very close to the main staging area, and you will likely see other riders.
Hartman Rocks Recreation Area which includes over 14,000 acres of public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management and 160 acres (The Base Area) owned and managed by The City of Gunnison, and Gunnison County.
Hartman Rocks has 45 miles of singletrack trail, 45 miles of roads, 50 designated dispersed campsites, and countless climbing crags. Singletrack trails are perfect for mountain biking, dirt biking, hiking, and trail running. Roads are often traveled by 4x4 trucks, ROVs and ATVs. In the winter months, 16 miles of roads are groomed as cross-country ski trails for classic and skate skiing; and some single-track trails are groomed as winter singletrack for fat biking.
