Описание: The fort is located at the mouth of the Kundalika River. It is easily accessible by road. The Alibag-Murud road passes through the fort. Earlier the fort was guarded on three sides by creek water. The main entrance is from the southern side.

This fort was built by Portuguese Capt. Soj, and completed in 1524.[1] It was in the control of Portuguese till 1806 when it was captured by Marathas. Finally it was captured by British in 1818.

Revdanda fort is a historical fort located in the village of revdanda, in raigarh district of maharashtra. it is about  17km from the town of alibaug and 125km away from mumbai. located on the shore of revdanda beach, this fort is popular not only for its stunning visuals but also for its historical importance and architecture.

History

The place, according to the indian mythology, was earlier known as “revatikshetra.” history has it that lord krishna gifted this place to the wife of balarama (his brother), known as revati during their marriage ceremony and was subsequently named after her as revatikshetra.

Given its location on the seashore, the place soon gained importance as a prominent trading place during the 6th century. its importance continued to flourish and it turned out to be an important port at the end of 10th century under the rule of nizam shahi nawabs. when portuguese entered the country during the 15th century, they recognized the potential of revdanda from a trading point of view and captured it.

Once under their control, the place was soon converted into a popular trading port and subsequently led to building revdanda fort in 1558. portuguese captain, saoj was the man responsible for the construction of this architectural marvel. after its completion many indian rulers, including the marathas, tried to capture the fort, but were unsuccessful. the fort finally went into the hands of the british in 1818 after they invaded our country.

Features

Much of the revdanda village lies inside the fort thus making it a private place. however, the visitors can visit the west side of the fort, which is open for tourists. being a sea fort, the compound walls of the fort are eroded due to the splashing of the waves during high tides.

Revdanda had a chapel where st francis xaviers delivered one of his earliest sermons in the indian subcontinent. now the church is in ruins. revdanda was also the first place in india where afanasy nikitin, the first russian traveler landed.

The prominent feature of the fort is the underground tunnels that are made of brick and mortar. each tunnel is about 3mts long and 3mts wide. these are arch decorated tunnels and their construction in those times without using any modern tools still remains to be a mystery. this place is a “must visit” for all those who love history and ancient architecture.

Distance between alibaug and mumbai is 95.1km by road and frequent transportation is available. and from pune, alibaug is located at a distance of 141.5km by road. once you reach alibaug, revdanda beach is just 17km away
