Why is the BNP distancing itself from the July Charter?

The party's main argument is that the Charter has no clear constitutional basis. It should be incorporated through a formal amendment in Parliament. The BNP has initially disagreed with some aspects, such as proportional representation and the design of the upper house, which could weaken its large majority. Although Tarique Rahman supported a "yes" vote in the referendum, the party does not consider it completely binding. The BNP believes that reforms can only be implemented through an elected Parliament, not through an interim government. They see this as a plot to hold power hostage, an attempt to advance the Yunus government's agenda. Blitz newspaper editor Salahuddin Shoaib Chowdhury wrote on X that Yunus tried to destroy democracy through this council. The BNP's rejection is a strategy to consolidate its electoral victory, but it could increase political instability.
