Need to replace a TXV or piston metering device? Here’s a quick guide:
🔧 Step 1: Recover all refrigerant from the system using proper recovery methods.
💨 You can’t open the lines without pulling the charge.
🔍 Step 2: Access the evaporator coil — the TXV or piston is usually located inside the liquid line inlet of the coil, in the air handler or furnace cabinet.
🛠️ Step 3: If it’s a piston, remove the retaining ring or brass fitting, pull out the old piston, and slide in the new one — same size ONLY.
🧴 Lube it lightly with refrigerant oil before inserting.
🔁 Step 4: If it's a TXV, disconnect the sensing bulb, unsweat or unthread the valve, and install the new one.
📌 Mount the sensing bulb tight on the suction line — at 3 or 9 o’clock — and insulate it properly.
✅ Step 5: Braise or reconnect fittings, pressure test, evacuate the system down to 500 microns, and recharge to spec.
❄️ Done right, you’ll have better cooling and stable pressures.
