Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago was not born from permission. It was born from resistance.
From Emancipation to the 1881 Canboulay Riots, Carnival became the space where the powerless could challenge power. Calypso evolved as the voice of the working class — the newspaper of the people — holding leaders accountable when ordinary citizens could not.
Recent concerns surrounding alleged audio issues during a calypso performance critical of the Government have raised important questions.
This episode does not rush to conclusions.
Instead, we examine:
• The historical roots of Carnival as resistance
• Why calypso has always made governments uncomfortable
• The constitutional protection of freedom of expression
• The difference between technical failure and editorial interference
• Why transparency is essential in any democracy
This is not about UNC.
This is not about PNM.
This is about principle.
Carnival is cultural resistance.
Calypso is accountability in rhythm.
If that space is weakened — even subtly — we must ask questions respectfully, firmly, and without fear.
TEN will always defend democratic values over tribal loyalty.
