The vision: In the spirit of transparency, my fluid art pieces do not always turn out as I imagined :) For this piece, I was going for a colorful fall themed leaf cutout to use as seasonal décor in my office.

Steps and procedures:
**I always make sure my canvas is level**
1) Tape the sides of the wood cutout to keep excess paint from dripping down the sides.
2) Prepare paint in desired colors. I used paints I mixed in advance and stored in 16 ounce squeeze bottles.
3) Dispense paint into each small cup and add 1-2 drops of silicone oil into each cup. Stir well. I used 2 ounce compostable cups.
4) Layer paints on wood cutout to create desired look. It is best to layer paints when using this technique.
5) Spread paint around the wood cutout evenly by spinning or tilting. Use a butane torch or heat gun to pop bubbles if necessary.
6) Take a slightly damp paper towel (I typically wring it out before use) and gently drape over the surface of the wood, ensuring that every area is covered. I recommend practicing this step prior to beginning a project; it can take some practice to get this motion down! GENTLY touch the surface of the paper with minimal pressure to ensure that all areas are fully touching the paint.
7) Slowly and carefully begin lifting the paper towel to a center point. Be careful not to drop any edges you have picked up and try to work evenly. This step is also important to practice as this can be VERY tricky to get right. Move as slow as you need to!
8) Add any finishing details. I created lines in the leaf with leftover color; this step (as with many others!) is purely personal preference.
9) Allow the piece to dry completely before removing tape.
10) To paint the edge, I started with a base coat of white and finished with a metallic hue. I painted very carefully because I did not want to spend the time to tape the top of the leaf.

My takeaways: I'm happy with the way this piece turned out! I think I would have saved myself a lot of time by pre-painting the sides before attaching the tape. Then, I would have just had to do touchups as opposed to carefully painting the entire edge.
