No speed limits in Germany? Why the U.S. doesn’t have an Autobahn – this video totally peaked my curiosity, and yeah, I had a pretty good guess why America doesn’t roll like that, but I learned a bunch of new wild facts about the famous German highway system that blew me away.
The Autobahn is legendary for its de-restricted sections where passenger cars can legally go as fast as their engines allow (people hit over 200 mph sometimes), but it’s not the whole network—about half has no limit, a third has permanent restrictions (near cities, construction, risky spots), and the rest has advisory 130 km/h (81 mph). It started in the 1930s as a propaganda project, had limits during Nazi times for resource reasons, then got fully unrestricted post-WWII in 1952 as West Germany flexed freedom against East Germany’s communism. Culturally, it ties into Germany’s car industry pride (Porsche, BMW, Mercedes love testing there), strict driver training, thick roads built for high speeds, and hardcore etiquette like left lane for passing only.
In the US, our highways aren’t engineered the same, driver licensing is way easier, people don’t follow lane discipline as religiously, and liability/safety concerns (plus historical oil crises) keep blanket limits in place. As an American, this one really highlighted how Europe’s approach to roads and driving just feels different—more disciplined yet liberating. Great video overall; made me wanna rent a fast car and try a de-restricted stretch someday. What surprised you most about the Autobahn? Let me know below! 🏎️🇩🇪
