As Malaysia steps deeper into the digital era, this question grows more urgent. Technology is no longer just a tool, it shapes how we live, learn, and connect. Yet, with growing calls for tighter online regulation to curb scams and harmful content, another concern emerges: where does protection end and control begin?
Governments push for safety. Citizens demand freedom. Platforms wield power that transcends borders. In this complex web, digital sovereignty becomes more than a policy goal, it’s a question of identity, autonomy, and trust. Our Deputy Director of Research, Dr. Rachel Gong, reminds us that context matters: Is the problem the content itself, or how we choose to manage it?
