We are currently witnessing a massive re-valuation of Ken Griffey Jr.’s 90s inserts.
Think back to 1990. At that time, the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle—the "Holy Grail" of the hobby—was exactly 38 years old. To a kid in 1990, that card felt like ancient history. It was a relic of the post-war era that was already priced at $7,000.
Fast forward to today. The distance between us and the 1997 Essential Credentials or the 1998 PMGs is now the exact same 38-year gap. We have officially reached the point where the 90s are the "New Vintage."
Just as collectors in the 90s scrambled to find "well-preserved" 50s cards before they disappeared into private vaults, we are now in a high-stakes race for 90s condition. The "junk wax" era may have produced millions of cards, but it produced very few masterpieces that survived the last four decades in Gem Mint condition.
