CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — This year marks 100 years of celebrating Black History Month, a commemoration that traces its origins back to 1926, when historian Carter G. Woodson established what was then known as Negro History Week. Nearly a century later, many say the story of Black history in America begins much closer to home — right here in the Lowcountry.
