Indian equity markets ended the first trading session of the new calendar year on a muted note. The Nifty closed almost flat near the 26,140 mark, reflecting a lack of strong directional cues, while the Bank Nifty outperformed with gains of 125 points, ending close to the crucial 59,000 level.

Broader markets showed mixed trends, with the mid-cap index gaining half a percent and small-cap stocks remaining flat. Auto stocks stayed in focus after December sales numbers, with Mahindra & Mahindra, Bajaj Auto, and Eicher Motors seeing buying interest.

Cigarette and tobacco stocks witnessed sharp selling pressure following a government notification indicating possible price hikes. ITC plunged nearly 9.5%, Godfrey Phillips dropped 17%, while VST Industries declined marginally.

Meanwhile, Vodafone Idea staged a strong recovery after yesterday’s fall, closing 8% higher, and Indus Towers surged over 4%. Overall, markets remained range-bound with limited action on the first day of the year.
