HORNSEY OVERVIEW - 1ST NOVEMBER 2024 - 1ST VISIT
Hornsey station opened in 1850 on the Great Northern Railway line from Peterborough to London. In the late 19th century, plans were made to extend the London Underground network to Hornsey, but these were ultimately abandoned. The station has undergone several renovations and expansions over the years, most recently in the 21st century. Today, it serves as a vital link for commuters and residents of North London.
Hornsey station is a two-platform station with a footbridge connecting the platforms. It has a single ticket office and several ticket vending machines. The station is situated on a curve, with the platforms curving slightly. The station is a bit basic.
Platform 1 trains at Hornsey go towards London, specifically Moorgate. Platform 2 trains at Hornsey go towards Hertfordshire, specifically Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City. Except the tracks by the train platforms, there are three other tracks in the middle and more train tracks behind platform 2, the platform where I trainspotted at.
Hornsey train station is located in the London Borough of Harringay, North London. It is on the Great Northern route that forms part of the East Coast Main Line, 4 miles 4 chains (6.5 km) down the line from London Kings Cross, and is situated between Harringay to the south and Alexandra Palace to the north. Hornsey station is adjacent to Hornsey E.M.U.D. (which is a train depot).
Most trains do not call at Hornsey. Great Northern Class 717 trains stop at Hornsey around every 15 minutes in each direction. Most trains do not call at Hornsey because the station is quite quiet, it is not very busy with passengers. However, it is very busy with trains. High-speed trains, Intercity Express Trains (IET), and many other commuter trains pass through this railway station. I filmed this station at a less busy time of the day around late midday to early afternoon. I didn’t record any LUMO services, they were in service but I didn’t spot any, apologies.
In my opinion, I think that Hornsey is a good place to trainspot. This is because the frequency of trains is amazing, the station layout is good for recording the trains, and you get a fantastic view of most of the trains. However, I won’t say this station is excellent to trainspot at because the view of the trains at platform 1, there is a fence blocking. This is the exact same with the view of the trains behind platform 2, where I trainspotted at. A Grand Central Class 180 was stationary right next to me (behind platform 2) for a long time and it made it worse because I couldn’t record a freight train properly. The station is also very simple. It is a good station overall to trainspot at.
Fun Fact (Repeated): In the late 19th century, plans were made to extend the London Underground network to Hornsey, but these were ultimately abandoned.
