‘Little Professor’ was first released in 1976 by Texas Instruments and sold over a million units in the following year. It is a backwards-functioning calculator. That is, it gives the user an unsolved equation and the user has to provide the answer. It has been a popular educational toy for decades and you can still purchase a solar-powered version today.

This model is from the 1980s and I purchased it from eBay for £7.00. It was completely dead when tested so I pulled it apart to investigate further. There is hardly anything to this ‘toy’ - a chip, an LCD screen and a membrane circuit board with some buttons. Because of the relative simplicity, it didn’t take too long to diagnose the problem and fix it.
