1. Wake up early
These are early morning hours before traffic. Depending on your line of work, commercial, residential or roll-off, you can be looking at anywhere from 2:45am to 7:00am

2. Safety meetings
These meetings at work are usually anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes long, depending on how your employer does it. Sometimes these happen, sometimes they don’t

3. Pre-trip
Do the pre-trip to get the day started. Have your superior sign off and you either wait for a certain time to leave the yard or wait until everyone is ready to leave and you leave the yard together.

4. Route (can be long or short)
In this job, if you have to stop and use the restroom, then by all means do it whenever. If you’re feeling hungry, then eat. Some employers track how long you stop, others don’t. Some just care about if you know you can finish your route in a decent time. If that’s the case, then they’re cool about it. On long days you can’t do that, so you have to hustle more. Depending on employer, amount of work can be much or little. If it’s little, then you might find yourself doing part-time work for full-time pay, meaning if you’re able to do a 6 hour route in a 10 hour shift, then the employer will stay pay the 10 hours, you usually go home if they have nothing else for you to do. If your work for a city, instead of allowing you to go home, they might tell you to just stay around until clock out time.

That’s the line of this work, the more customers there are the longer the routes are going to be. The more customers put their carts out, the longer the route is going to take to finish. This is where the overtime in the industry comes from. Again it all depends on employer and how many customers are being serviced.
