A scandalous holiday recording from the Sticky Sleeve Records vault – the Vegas lounge standard that ended a crooner's career.
D Indahoe (born Richard Indahoe) was a rising star in the Las Vegas lounge circuit in the mid-1950s. Known for his smooth baritone and Dean Martin-esque charm, he performed regularly at the Sands Hotel and was being groomed for a national recording contract. His Christmas shows were legendary among the after-hours Vegas crowd – intimate performances for high rollers and industry insiders after the family-friendly dinner shows ended.
"Grandpa Got an Esc*rt for Christmas" was recorded live during a late-night December 23, 1956 performance at the Sands' private lounge. The audience consisted of mobsters, celebrities, and wealthy gamblers who'd paid premium prices for the "adult entertainment" set. Indahoe, emboldened by champagne and the exclusive crowd, debuted this original composition to raucous applause.
Someone in the audience had a reel-to-reel recorder running.
When a bootleg acetate made its way to radio stations in early 1957, the response was swift and brutal. The Nevada Gaming Commission launched an investigation. The Sands immediately terminated Indahoe's contract. His nascent recording deal evaporated overnight. The FBI's Vice Squad raided the private lounge where the recording took place, citing "obscene performances corrupting public morals."
Indahoe was blacklisted from every major Vegas venue. He performed under various pseudonyms in smaller clubs throughout the late '50s and early '60s before leaving entertainment entirely in 1964. He died in obscurity in 1982, never having recovered from the scandal.
This recording survived because the bootlegger kept the master reel hidden for decades. It represents the seedy underbelly of 1950s Vegas glamour – where the smooth crooning and lush arrangements masked absolute moral depravity behind closed doors.
The Christmas song they didn't want America to hear.
