They say the third time is lucky, but that hasn’t been the case for Delhi Capitals Women in the Women’s Premier League. They have featured in all three WPL finals so far, yet are still waiting to get their hands on the silverware. They lost to the Mumbai Indians in the inaugural edition, to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the second, and again to the Mumbai Indians last year.
They go again, and standing in their way are the Royal Challengers Bengaluru once more. It will be a repeat of the 2024 final as the Delhi Capitals square off against RCB at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara on Thursday (February 5).
Delhi have had a change in leadership ahead of this season, letting go of Meg Lanning and appointing Jemimah Rodrigues as their captain. Jemimah found her form at the right time and played a key role in DC’s run to the final.
RCB, on the other hand, enjoyed a breathtaking start to their campaign despite missing a global superstar like Ellyse Perry at the start of the tournament. They won five games on the bounce before clinching their final league-stage fixture to secure direct entry into the final. What has stood out for the former champions is the way different players have stepped up at different moments to take the team over the line.
Delhi Capitals Women's Road to the final: One of the most consistent teams in WPL history, Delhi Capitals started the season with two consecutive defeats. They lost their campaign opener to Mumbai Indians before falling tantalisingly short against Gujarat Giants in their next encounter.
DC got their first points with a win over UP Warriorz, a side led by their former captain, Meg Lanning. They fell short against RCB in the next match but then went on to beat Mumbai Indians and outclass RCB in the reverse fixture.
They again failed to close out a run chase against Gujarat Giants but completed the double over UP Warriorz to secure a place in the Eliminator. They faced Gujarat Giants—who had got the better of them twice in the league stage—in the knockout. However, Shafali Verma and Lizelle Lee gave DC a rollicking start in the chase of 169, and the Capitals got over the line with 4.2 overs to spare. With the win, DC ensured themselves another shot at the elusive title.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women's Road to the final: The 2024 champions were in cruise control as they began the season with five wins on the bounce. They defeated Mumbai Indians in the curtain-raiser before brushing aside UP Warriorz by nine wickets in their second game. RCB then registered a 32-run win over Gujarat Giants.
They went on to beat Delhi Capitals by eight wickets and completed the double over Gujarat Giants with a commanding 61-run victory. RCB then suffered back-to-back defeats against Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians, before bouncing back with a win over UP Warriorz to top the league stage and seal a place in the final.
