Fort Thüngen is an eighteenth century fort, of which only three towers remained. A plan was devised to restore the fort and to add a new museum for modern art. The famous architect Joh Ming Pei was commissioned to design the new museum. After many discussions and changes the world heritage committee finally approved the plans. During the building of the new museum, the run-down fort could be rebuilt on the basis of original drawings. The division between old and new is clearly visible and became a Luxembourg style.
Fort Thüngen conceived and built by the Austrian fort commander Baron Freiherr von Thüngen, later fortified by Vauban and made Extra Large by the Prussians, will spend its days at the Musée de la Forteresse and at the Grand-Duc Jean Museum of Modern Art.
