Описание:
Portal Vein Thrombosis (PVT) is a condition in which a blood clot forms in the portal vein, the major vessel that carries blood from the intestines and spleen to the liver. When this obstruction persists over time, the body develops a network of small collateral veins to bypass the blockage — a condition known as Portal Cavernoma or Cavernous Transformation of the Portal Vein. These two interconnected conditions can seriously affect liver function, digestion, and overall metabolism.
Understanding from a Modern Medical View
Portal Vein Thrombosis (PVT):
It occurs when a thrombus (clot) obstructs blood flow in the portal vein. This can be either acute (sudden onset) or chronic (developing over time).
Portal Cavernoma:
When the blockage becomes long-standing, new, tiny veins develop around the obstructed area to restore partial blood flow — this gives a “cavernous” appearance on imaging, hence the term portal cavernoma.
Ayurvedic Viewpoint
In Ayurveda, the liver and portal circulation are governed by the Pitta dosha, primarily located in the region of Yakrit (liver) and Pleeha (spleen). When Pitta becomes aggravated due to improper diet, lifestyle, or toxins, it vitiates the blood (Rakta dhatu) and obstructs the natural channels of circulation (Srotas), leading to conditions resembling “Yakrit-Pleeha Vikara” and “Rakta Srotorodha” (obstruction of blood channels).
Ayurvedic Causes (Nidana)
-- Excessive intake of alcohol, spicy and oily food.
-- Suppression of natural urges.
-- Emotional stress and anger (Pitta aggravating factors).
-- Irregular eating habits and sedentary lifestyle.
-- Toxin accumulation (Ama) affecting liver metabolism.
Ayurvedic Symptoms (Lakshana)
-- Burning or heaviness in the upper abdomen.
-- Yellowish discoloration of skin or eyes.
-- Loss of appetite, indigestion, or nausea.
-- Weakness and fatigue.
-- Enlargement or tenderness in the liver-spleen region.
-- Occasional vomiting of blood or dark stools (if varices are present).
Ayurvedic Management
Ayurveda aims at restoring balance, detoxifying the liver, improving blood flow, and strengthening digestion (Agni). Treatment involves a combination of Shodhana (purification) and Shamana (pacification) therapies.
1. Dietary and Lifestyle Guidelines
-- Adopt a Pitta-pacifying diet – cooling, light, and easy to digest.
-- Avoid alcohol, fried food, red meat, and spicy items.
-- Include bitter and sweet herbs – like Neem, Guduchi, and Amalaki.
-- Drink lukewarm water infused with turmeric or coriander.
-- Practice stress-relieving yoga and pranayama such as Sheetali and Anuloma Viloma.
2. Herbal Formulations
-- Triphala Churna – for mild detoxification.
-- Punarnava Mandur – supports liver and spleen function.
-- Arogyavardhini Vati – improves liver metabolism and bile flow.
-- Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata) – hepatoprotective and anti-inflammatory.
-- Kutki (Picrorhiza kurroa) – enhances liver detoxification and reduces Pitta.
-- Bhringraj (Eclipta alba) and Guggulu – strengthen hepatic circulation.
3. Panchakarma Therapies
-- Virechana (Therapeutic Purgation): Classical therapy for Pitta disorders.
-- Basti (Medicated Enema): To balance Vata and improve blood flow.
-- Raktamokshana (Bloodletting): In selected cases to remove vitiated blood.
-- Abhyanga and Swedana: Gentle oil massage and steam for detoxification.
Conclusion
From an Ayurvedic expert’s standpoint, Portal Vein Thrombosis and Portal Cavernoma are not merely vascular problems but manifestations of deeper Rakta and Pitta imbalances. The goal of Ayurveda is to correct these internal disharmonies, improve circulation, cleanse the liver, and prevent further complications. With a holistic approach involving herbal medicine, Panchakarma, diet, and lifestyle management, Ayurveda offers promising supportive care to enhance quality of life and strengthen the liver’s vital energy.
