In this video, we take a look at the career of the outstanding actor Ichikawa En'ō II, known throughout most of his life as Ichikawa Ennosuke III, and his revolutionary contributions to kabuki. We also put him in the context of the Omodakaya guild, and the legacy of his predecessors.
The discussion of Ennosuke III's 1963 shūmei owes a lot to the detailed explanation in Samuel Leiter's book "Kabuki at the Crossroads – Years of Crisis, 1952-1965", which I recommend to anyone interested in the history of kabuki during the XX century.
