A failing headset rarely breaks without warning — it usually gives you clear signs if you know what to look for.
In this video, I show 3 key symptoms that indicate your headset needs servicing or adjustment before it turns into a bigger problem. You’ll learn how to quickly inspect your bike at home using simple checks that take only a minute.
We start by lifting the front wheel and turning the handlebars to see if the steering moves freely. Any resistance, grinding, or clicking can mean the headset is too tight and the bearings may already be damaged. Next, we check for play by applying the front brake and rocking the bike back and forth while feeling the top of the headset. Movement here indicates a loose headset, which can allow dirt and water to enter and cause uneven bearing wear. Finally, we look for visible signs of rust, which point to corrosion and often require immediate attention.
If you notice any of these warning signs, your headset may need adjustment, servicing, or replacement. Catching the problem early can save your bearings, improve handling, and prevent costly repairs down the line.
