🗺️ This scenic circular walk starts and finishes at the historic Lion Inn on Blakey Ridge, in the heart of the North York Moors. The route descends into the Rosedale valley, meanders through tranquil farmland and the quiet hamlet of Thorgill, then climbs up to a disused railway that once played a key role in the ironstone trade. From there, it loops across open moorland, with spectacular views over Rosedale.
📏 The walk is 8 miles long, takes about 4 hours to complete, and includes a total ascent of 280 metres. You’ll find step-by-step directions, route info, and parking guidance on the walk page. There are also links to Ordnance Survey and Outdooractive maps, which let you print the route, save it to your phone, or download it as a GPX file.
🌿 Blakey Ridge stretches from Rosedale to Farndale, running north to south through the centre of the North York Moors. It rises to around 400 metres at its highest point, offering wide, open views of both valleys. The ridge road links the villages of Castleton and Hutton-le-Hole, and right at the midpoint stands the Lion Inn, a characterful 16th-century pub.
📸 There’s plenty to take in along the way. From the Lion Inn, the path descends into Rosedale, with grassy slopes and views of the old iron kilns across the valley. After passing a handful of cottages and farms, the steep climb up Thorgill Bank makes for a bit of a workout, but at the top, you’re rewarded with sweeping views and a strong sense of the area’s industrial past. The route then follows the old railway line for a gentle stretch, before returning to the Lion Inn for a well-earned pint.
