About this Indonesian Temple vlog:
While in Yogyakarta, I had to visit the two famous temples of Central Java. I got up early to see the sunrise over Borobudur Temple, which was a fantastic site. Seeing the largest Buddhist temple, Borobudur Temple, and the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia, Prambanan Temple, was well worth the drive and getting up early. Highly recommended!

About Borobudur Temple:
Borobudur is the world’s largest Buddhist temple, located in Central Java, Indonesia. Built in the 9th century during the Sailendra Dynasty, it was constructed without the use of cement, using interlocking volcanic stone blocks. The temple is designed in the shape of a mandala, symbolizing the universe in Buddhist cosmology. It consists of nine stacked platforms topped by a central dome, which is surrounded by 72 stupas, each containing a statue of the Buddha. Borobudur was mysteriously abandoned in the 14th century and rediscovered in the 1800s by the British under Sir Stamford Raffles. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting pilgrims and tourists from around the world, especially during Vesak Day. The site offers breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and Mount Merapi, especially at sunrise. Borobudur is not only an architectural masterpiece but also a spiritual and cultural treasure of Indonesia.

Candi Borobudur adalah mahakarya arsitektur Buddha yang terletak di Magelang, Jawa Tengah. Dibangun sekitar abad ke-8 hingga ke-9, candi ini mencerminkan kejayaan Kerajaan Syailendra. Borobudur terdiri dari tiga tingkat utama: Kamadhatu (alam duniawi), Rupadhatu (alam bentuk), dan Arupadhatu (alam tanpa bentuk), yang menggambarkan perjalanan spiritual menuju pencerahan. Prambanan is the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia and one of the most impressive in Southeast Asia. Located in Central Java, it was built in the 9th century during the reign of the Sanjaya Dynasty. The temple complex is dedicated to the Trimurti: Brahma the Creator, Vishnu the Preserver, and Shiva the Destroyer. Its tallest temple, dedicated to Shiva, reaches 47 meters into the sky. Prambanan is renowned for its towering spires and intricate stone carvings that depict scenes from the Ramayana epic. Although partially damaged by earthquakes over the centuries, many parts have been carefully restored. Today, Prambanan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major tourist destination. Visitors often attend Ramayana ballet performances held outdoors near the temples. At sunrise or sunset, the silhouette of Prambanan’s pointed towers against the sky offers a magical experience. It stands as a majestic symbol of Indonesia’s Hindu heritage.
