However, Paraiba tourmalines, known for their vivid pastel hues in the blue to green range, revolutionized the market with terms like "neon," "Caribbean blue," and "electric green." Prices skyrocketed within a year of their discovery, especially for stones with tonal values between forty-five and sixty percent. While the San José da Batalha mine was quickly depleted, the legacy of Paraiba tourmalines remains, elevating tourmaline to a gemstone with prestige and value in its own right, rather than just as ruby, sapphire, or emerald look-alikes.
