ADHD Meds & Your Heart: The Study Everyone’s Ignoring
One of the biggest ADHD studies ever — with 278,000 children — just uncovered something important about ADHD medication and your heart.
👉 Every single year you stay on stimulant medication,
your risk of cardiovascular disease goes up by about 4%.
Heart attacks at 20 are fairly rare but not impossible.
But what this really means is things like:
Higher blood pressure
Artery changes
Stroke risk slowly rising over time
And the curve wasn’t random.
The longer you’re on the medication,
the higher the risk climbed.
The researchers literally said:
“Be cautious with long-term use.”
This doesn’t mean the meds are bad — they can be life-changing.
It just means they’re not heart-neutral,
and if you’re on them for years it raises the risk. If you are on them your heart should be monitored.
Research Behind This Post
Zhang L. et al. (2024). Long-term Cardiovascular Risk Associated With ADHD Medication: A Nationwide Nested Case-Control Study. JAMA Psychiatry.
278,027 children and adults followed in Sweden.
Finding: Each additional year of stimulant/atomoxetine use was linked to a ~4% increase in cardiovascular disease risk, especially hypertension and arterial disease.
